If you have ever been fascinated by this ancient craft, join us for this half-day workshop with our local Country Craftsman, Bert Manton, and learn the practical skills involved in weaving corn dollies, suitable for complete beginners!

Corn dolly making was practiced by our ancestors as part of their harvest festival as it was thought that the ‘Spirit of Fertility’ lived amongst the corn! At the end of the harvest the last sheaf of corn was used to make the corn dolly where the spirit would reside for the winter to be ploughed back into the field in the spring to ensure a good harvest. This traditional craft was brought to a halt by the advent of mechanization in the 1800s, but is now being revived as a fascinating hobby by many people who are fascinated by the beautiful weaving techniques and local designs involved in corn dolly making. A piece of ‘Straw Work’ can make an unusual gift, as well as being a natural, environmentally friendly decoration for your own home.

During the morning, with demonstrations and displays of straw work from other countries, Bert will teach you about the materials used and how to prepare them, a range of different weaving techniques and several different designs. Then with Bert’s excellent guidance and supervision you will make your own piece of straw work, choosing from a traditional neck dolly, a tear-drop or a horseshoe…perfectly timed to celebrate the autumn equinox and harvest!

The number of attendees on this workshop will be limited to a maximum of 8.
